During the past several years, there has been a significant shift in U.S. Soccer philosophy concerning youth soccer. Instead of concentrating on games and winning, the lower levels of youth soccer (U-8, U-9, and even U-10) are starting to concentrate more on development. This is exemplified by modifications in Coaching Licensure, Education, and Game Structure (4V4, 5V5, 7V7, 9V9, and 11V11). There are many different leagues and clubs throughout New Jersey and the United States that are following the U.S. Soccer recommendations and are entering into or forming separate 4V4 and 5V5 programs and leagues.
A proposal has been made by a number of CESC Trainers, Parent Coaches (Assistant Coaches), and CESC Board of Directors to start a similar program that will take many of the skills presented and learned in Caperoos (Dribbling, Passing, Defending etc.) and expanding upon them to further prepare the players for eventual entry into 7v7 games and league play.
The program is anticipated to operate as follows: During the fall season, Kanga players (U-8 Boys and Girls) will train twice a week with CESC Certified Trainers and approved CESC Volunteer Coaches (Assistant Coaches). Once again following approved US Soccer guidelines and curriculum, training will be provided to the players that expounds upon the skills and knowledge they learned during the Caperoos program. In addition to learning the technical aspects of the game (dribbling, passing, finishing etc.) students will learn the tactical aspects of the game to include understanding the break-out line, soccer attacking and defensive formations.
Similar to the Caperoos games on Saturdays, Kanga players will participate in “controlled” games where emphasis will be placed upon learning and player development instead of winning or losing.
Based upon the results of an evaluation process by CESC Trainers, Kanga players may be enrolled in a travel soccer tournament in the fall, a tournament in the spring, or a sanctioned travel league in the spring such as South Jersey Soccer League or South Jersey Girls Soccer League. Player and team selection will be made by the CESC Trainers in consultation with the CESC Director of Coaching.
